Success of Marcus Island Raid

Keceived Thursday, 9 p.m.

PEARL HARBOUR, ‘hept. ».

The American task force which at tacked Marcus Island on September 1, destroyed 80 per cent, of the military installations on the island, said Admiral Nimitz in a communique. Om losses were two fighters and one torpedo plane. The force, under the command of Rear-Admiral Charles Pownall, attacked at dawn. The first wave apparently caught the enemy completely by surprise. Some flak was en countered by the initial wave but was eliminated in succeeding attacks, several of which were made during the day. Fires were started all over the island and were still burning the following day. Enemy planes did not leave the ground. Our fighters destroyed seven twin-engined bombers parked on the runway and destroyed installations including hangars, fuel, ammunition stores, shops and living quarters. An enemy trawler was sunk near the island.
