The War in China
Received Sunday, 7.30 p.m. CHUNGKING, Sept. 4. Chinese shore batteries repulsed Japanese trying to land on Santuao Island northward of Foochow. Japanese warships pounded the shore from close in. The Japanese are known to fear the establishment of air bases at Fukien from where attacks on Japan could be launched. An Army spokesman said recent Japanese air activity indicated preparations for a showdown with the American air force in China. The Japanese have increased the strength of their ground forces in Burma lo seven and ahalf divisions including three and a-half from Malaya, and have also increased their air strength. The spokesman added that the Japanese have taken over the full protection of the ladoChina border with Vichy acquiescence. General Stilwell’a communique says United States planes bombed Japanese targets in China and Indo-China including aerodromes and the Canton railway southward of Hankow, and have also Idivebombed and left sinking a 450-foot ship off Hongkong.
