Rivers in Flood

Following ►Saturday's rain in the upper Manawatu and southern Hawke's Bay, the Oroua, Pohangina and Manawatu rivers were all in flood yesterday, but fortunately the storm moved northwards fairly quickly and the danger of a major flood passed. Predictions from the elaborate system of gauge readings now installed, were that tho Manawatu river at Fitzherbert bridge would not rise beyond 14 feet. At midday yesterday, the height was 10ft, at 5 p.m., 12ft Gin, and at 8.30, 13ft Sin, where it was continuing steadily at midnight. The flood wave in the Pohangina was the first to come down, followed by the wave in the Manawatu and Oroua rivers, the latter again overflowing its banks in tho vicinity of Kopane. The Pohangina looked ugly yesterday morning and just readied the top of the road at the new bridge. There arc two small slips in the Gorge necessitating one-way traffic. It is feared the cold wind and wet conditions will result iu considerable mortality amongst lambs, some losses already being reported. Snow fell in parts of tbe higher country. In Feihling, the rainfall was l.lSins. in the 24 hours ended 9 a.in. yesterday. The Siberia road connecting the Gorge with the Palliatua Track. is closed 1o traffic.
