Chamber of Commerce
At a meeting of the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce, Mr. 11. L. Cunninghame presiding, the acting secretary reported on an interview with a representative of the Railway Department in re-
spect of uncancelled reservations on trains. It appeared that whilst the military authorities were certainly responsible for a number of uncancelled reserva tions, the general travelling public were responsible for at least 70 per cent, ot these. In so far as the travelling public were concerned, it appeared that tho position arose mainly as the result of interruptions in the steamer service between the North and South Islands and where hotel accommodation could not be secured. The department was making an appeal for peopo to cancel reservations which were not required and a special group of employees had now been detailed to endeavour to remedy the position and & great improvement had been made. A letter of resignation was received with regret from Mr. M. H. Oram, who found it impossible to attend meetings. Mr. F. G. Opie was appointed convener of the legislation committee in place of Mr. Oram. A general meeting of the chamber is to be held shortly at which Mr. Patrick, a representative of the taxation committee of the Associated Chambers of Commerce, will be present.
