Wellington’s Enthusiastic Civic Welcome

WELLINGTON, Aug. 30. The citizens of Wellington paid their tribute to Mrs. Roosevelt when they filled the Majestic Theatre and applauded the fine sentiments she expressed in reply to the civic welcome by the Mayor. Before she rose to speak, they sang with hearty warmth of feeling: “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow.’* Hon. D. G. Sullivan on behalf of the Prime Minister, welcomed Mrs. Roosevelt. No one could help but be deeply touched by the kindness and friendly welcome extended by the officials of the Government and people in Wellington, Mrs. Roosevelt said in reply. In the feeling of hearty welcome to her as wife of the President, sho felt also there was a feeling of confidence in that what was being done by the leaders ol Great Britain, the Dominions and the United States would be done with integrity and courage and with determination to protect those freedoms for which they fought to-day. Farewelled at the Wellington railway station to-night by the Govcrnor-Gen-eneral, Mrs. Roosevelt, accompanied by her official party, travelled overnight to Rotorua where her first engagement to-morrow morning is a civic reception at 11 o’clock. In the alternoon. she will visit Whakarewarewa to sec the thermal region and proceed from there to a farm where she will see land girls at work. She will also visit the New Zealand Army convalescent hospital, in the evening, she will be accorded a full Maori welcome at Tamatekapua, leaving later for Auckland where she is due the following morning.
