P.N. River Board
The Mayor, Mr. A. E. Hansford, was in the chair at a meeting of the Palmerston North River Board yesterday. A letter was received from the Manawatu Golf Club thanking the board for holding over certain proposed stopbanking which would have interfered with the golf course. It also stated that club members would be glad to inspect the depressions which the board has decided to fill in so ah to form some protection against the advent of a flood. A copy of the order-in-council was forwarded to the board constituting the Manawatu Catchment District together with a copy of the order-in-council apportioning representation of the Manawatu Catchment Board. Mr. A. Lane, foreman of works, reported that at Mcßae’s Bend, the brush groyne work at No. 4 groyne, had been completed. At present the staff was engaged on brush groyne work at Hop* croft’s Bend. It will be necessary to construct two of these groynes owing to the weakness developing along tho bank for a greater distance than was at first ascertained. Approximately eight chains of new fence was necessary to be erected to prevent stock from wandering on the uncompleted section of the stopbank below Fitzroy Street, on account of the completion of the bank being held over for tho present. The small groyne at Hopcroft’s Bend, which was carried away during the recent floods, lodged on the groyne immediately below causing some damage to the front section of the intact groyne. The structure caught up on the groyne will bo haulded to the opposite side and dismantled at a later date. Certain repair work will be necessary to be carried out on the existing groyne.
