TWO-YEAR-OLDS IN ACTION AT AWAPUNI DEBUTANTE STAKES CANDIDATES Three Awapuni-trained candidates for the Wanganui Debutante Stakes were sent along over three furlongs on Saturday morning. They were Mr. G. M. Currie’s fillies, Subdued and Intense, and Messrs Jim and Lloyd McMillan's filly, Sival. The last-named, ridden by A. S. Ewan, began best, but they were in line before they had gone very far. Subdued (C. A. Bowry) and Intense (A. G. Waddell) were on terms a couple of lengths in front of Sival when they straightened up for home, but Sival closed the gap and they were in line and going easily at the finish, the distance on good going being cut out in a shade better than 39. The season so far has not been favourable for two-year-olds and G. W. New states that these youngsters are not as far forward as he would like to have them. Subdued is a brown filly by Ringmaster from Submission, winner of the G.N. Champagne Stakes and the 1939 Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes. She is lighter in build than the other two but she is a smooth if lazy galloper and she looks a shade further forward than her stablemates. Intense is a bay filly by Ringmaster from Burnish, winner of the G.N. Champagne Stakes and the 1934 Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes. She can gallop but she might take moro time than Subdued. 1 Sival is a browm filly by Ringmaster from Lavish, by Limond from Imprudence, by Royal Lancer —Joaufax (imp.). Lavish w r as a rare galloper but her racing career was a very short one which will probably prove to be all to the good so far as Sival is concerned. She began brilliantly in Saturday’s flutter and then seemed keen to be with the othors at the finish when she was galloping as straight as a gun barrel.
