Colonel Closey's Campaign

Speaking at Tiritea on Saturday night on the subject of the recently announced political platform of the National Party', Colonel Closey said that he was distressed at the declaration that local industrial manufacturers were to be fully protected against the low-living-standard countries. This meant shattering trade relationships with those countries which bought our butter, meat and wool. It would also deprive the Now Zealand consumer of the benefits which industrial skill and mass production has bestowed upon the world. It appeared that the city manufacturers had captured control of the National Party and this with trades union influence upon the Government made the outlook for the farmer exceedingly’ bleak. It would appear that the ghastly tragedy of the war had taught uothiug to our leaders and the Atlantic Charter carried neither inspiration nor warning for them.
