Notes of the Day

Early this week the occupier of certain business premises in Fergusson Street found evidence of the premises having been visited by a burglar. The local Boy Scouts Club room was found to have been entered and a number pf badges stolen. The matter was reported to the police. Sub-Lieut. D. H. Graham, younger son of Mr. and Mrs. John Graham of Feilding, is among those officers and men of a New Zealand corvette who have been honoured by the President of .the United States for the -part thev played in the sinking of a Japanese submarine in the Solomons area recently. Yesterday morning at the Feilding Borough Council chamber tho i’atriotic Society through Mr. T. 1/. Seddon (Mayor) made presentations to the following: Sgt. F. A. Dalziell anil Gnr. It. L. Thomas. Both had served in the Feilding Battalion of tho Home Guard before volunteering for service with another branch of the armed forces. Presentations were also made to Cpl. lan Aitken, Gnr. T. G. Gloyn and Sgnin. H. Mingins in absentia. In the Feilding Drill Hail, a military unit held an enjoyable dunce at which a feature the decorative scheme aroused much favourable comment. Supper was served by members of the W.W.S.A., and at the conclusion of the programme, Major H. H. Toy extended thanks to those who had worked to make the evening such a success. Several officers from other units were guests. The law and order section of the E.P.S. met on Thursday and discussed the reorganiation as set out in a recent circular received from the Director of National Service, it would appear that there is little in the general organisation that has been altered so far as the unit is concerned; nor, indeed, does it appear that the general organisation of any other units has been uttered in any particular way, except that each unit is to have special training in the form of lectures, practical demonstrations, exercises and practices, including trials in the following: Elementary first aid, elementary fire-fighting, protection against high explosives, unexploded bombs, crowd dispersal, resuscitation, stretcher bearing, personal and genera! hygiene, and elementary chemical warfare. An executive will probably be set up to carry out this instruction, but to a great extent the general duties ot the unit have already included a good deal of the instruction set out in the circular. For some time the law and order unit has been instructed in elementary first aid, elementary fire lighting, protection against high explosives .and resuscitation, while crowd dispersal has always been a general instruction throughout the life of the organisation of this unit. But with each uuit taking similar instructions there will be the advantage in the future that should it be necessary one unit will be in a position to immediately, and with intelligence and success, give assistance to any other unit requiring it. The meeting had a full attendance, the enthusiasm shown indicating the interest shown by the members in the organisation.
