In Honour of Canberra’s Gallant Fight
Received Sunday, 7 p.m. CANBERRA, Feb. 21,
As a compliment to the Australian cruiser sunk while protecting American marines landing in the Solomons, the United States Navy intends naming one of its new cruisers “Canberra. ” The Australian Government had previously intended to rename the Shropshire, presented to Australia by Great Britain, after the Commonwealth National Capital. Mr. Curtin has announced that by permission of the King, the British gift cruiser Shropshire will now retain her old name. The Shropshire was presented to Australia to replace the Canberra. Before her sinking in a sudden Japanese night attack, the Canberra engaged enemy aircraft in a daylong battle, covering the landing of American marines. In the engagement in which she was sunk, her captain, F. E. Getting, was mortally wounded, but he sat on a stool on the bridge and directed operations.
