Australia Wants to Make Aluminium

Received Sunday, 7 p.m. CANBERRA, Feb. 27. If the plant can be obtained from overseas, the Commonwealth Government will implement a plan to produce 10,000 tons of aluminium a year in Australia. The Minister of Supply, Mr. Beasley, said the estimated cost of establishing tho industry was £3,000,000. So far efforts to obtain the necessary plant from the United States had failed. Tho Minister added that a survey revealed that Australia possessed adequate supplies of high grade bauxite from which aluminium is made, but the electrical and smelting machinery must be obtained from overseas. The industry would require upwards of a 1000 men for operational purposes, while the coal consumption for an alumina factory would not be less than 35,000 tons a year.
