Heroic Action of Driver of Runaway Roller
DUNEDIN, Feb. 26. “It must be agreed that deceased could have jumped clear but instead he attempted to divert the course of the roller so as to avert injury or danger to pedestrians,” said the Coroner, Mr. H. itf. Bunlde, S.M., to-day, at tho conclusion of an inquest into the death of John Smith, a married man, aged 58, who was killed on January 27 when the steam roller he was driving got out ot control and overtuAed at the intersection of Albert Street and York Place. Sergeant O’Carroll associated the police with tho coroner’s remarks and said it was obvious that deceased was prepared to sacrifice his life to save others. The actioii of Rev. D. G. White and a soldier who assisted him to remove deceased from under the roller, was also com mended by the coroner, who returned a verdict in accordance with the medicai evidence.
