Prisoner Who Hid in Creepers
Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Feb. 26.
Charged with attempting to escape from lawful custody by concealing himself on prison works on February 19, Leonard Ralph Hale, aged 22, single, a prisoner in Auckland Gaol, pleaded not guilty before Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M. Accused, who was employed with other men in a quarry, was missing when the cease veork muster was held, said Mr. W. T. Leggett, superintendent of the gaol. He was found concealed behind a shed in a small depression beneath some dead creeper. When a warder was ordered to tramp over the creeper he trod on accused. It was evident he was trying to conceal himself so that when darkness came he would make good his escape. The Magistrate said breaking away was a serious offence. Accused would be punished by being placed on bread and water for seven days.
