Wool Payments
APPRAISAL CRITICISED The view that recent appraisals of wool in Auckland were not giving effect to the nominal 15 per cent, increase In prices granted by the British Government was expressed by a woolgrower. He quoted figures from an appraisement which, he claimed, indicated that the appraisers were not valuing the clips in terms of the increase on last year’s values. The grower said the appraisal for A hoggets wool was 144 d, compared with 13£d last year, the increase being 9.4 per cent.; B hoggets was 14d, against 12|d making 9.S per cent; fine crossbred 15d, against 133;d, 13.2 per cent.; medium crossbred, against 12£d, 9.8 per cent.; and pieces lOd, against 94d, 5.3 per cent. The grower said the Government had announced its intention to retain 10 per cent, of the 15 per cent, increase. Irrespective of the amount retained, he contended that the 15 per cent, should have been added to last year’s basicrate. When the percentages in recent appraisals were examined it would be found that they were considerably less than the increase given by the British Government. It appeared that the appraisers had been instructed to tighten up their grading standards, and on the appraisals recently made it was obvious that the grower would get nothing like the increased payment whether it was paid under a deferred method or in full from season to season.
