H. Hinds, of Lady’s Mile, have re- j turned home to Hawera. , Mr. G. F. Smith (chairman) presided over a meeting of the Foxton Christmas * Cheer Committee. The canvassers f (Messrs. R. O. Hornblow and W. D. J Neville) submitted a report on collections ] to date, which was considered satis- ] factory. It was decided to issue each child with a coupon to the value of Is and to take the necessary steps to obtain 1 fruit for disti'ibution. The matter of the i free picture entertainment was left to the 1 chairman to take up with the Borough j Council. The secretary (Mr. H. Robson) r reported that tokens of goodwill for ufl 1 local men serving overseas were ready for mailing. It was decided to meet again at ' an eaiiy date to finalise matters in con- C nection with the Christmas News and en- ] tertainment of the children. , On Saturday night members of the Foxton Volunteer Fire Brigade journeyed to Otaki to play a challenge billiards 1 match for the Coley Shield held by Otaki and after some interesting play Otaki re- ■ tabled the shield, the aggregate points 1 being Otaki 568, Foxton 508. The results ' of the games played being as follows: Edwards 200 v. Huff 174, Smith 168 v. - Robinson 200, Wright 200 v. Robson 134. : The largest bi-eak of the evening was made by Edwards (Otaki) 68. The death occurred at the Wellington Hospital on October 31st, of Mrs. Jeannie - McLeod, wife of Mr. Percy McLeod, of Wellington, aged 46 years. Born in Scotland, deceased came to Foxton as a child 1 with her parents, Mr. and the late Mrs. Jas. Mclfcnight, of Duncan Street. She re- ' ccived her education at the local school • and was well-known locally prior to her , departure to Wellington, where she had ■ been residing for some years. Mrs. G. ' Mounsey, of Norbiton Road, is a sister 1 of deceased and brothers are Messrs. Jim 1 (Wellington), John (Nelson), and Bill (Overseas) McKnight. Mrs. R. O. Hornblow (president) presided over a meeting of the Foxton Horticultural Society. Motions of sympathy were accorded the relatives of the late Sgt.-Pilot D. Chrystall and Mr. G. A. Spring. Matters in connection with the summer show were discussed. The president reported that the construction of storage space for the society’s property at the Masonic Hall had been completed. The society was indebted to Mr. Holcroft, of ,the Beach, and particularly to Mr. T. Hughes, of Robinson Street, who had voluntarily given his services and thereby effected a considerable saving to the society. Mrs. A. E. Collins, of Jenks Street, is holidaying at Bulls and she intends visiting Wanganui, Hawera and New Plymouth before returning home. The friends of Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Barnett, of Avenue Road, will be pleased to learn that their small son, Digby, has now returned home. For the past two years Digby has been in Palmerston North, where, as an outpatient of the hospital, > he has been receiving medical treatment. Friends of Mrs. A. P. Easton, of Robinson Street, will regret to learn that ske , is indisposed. Mrs. G. A. Perreau, of Thynno Sti'eet, . suffered a fractured arm when she slipped ; and fell on the factory floor. Mr. R. O. Hornblow (president) pre- ; sided over the annual meeting of the , Foxton Surf and Life Saving Club. Dis--1 cussion ensued regarding the fate of the club during the war period and it was dei cided to endeavour to carry on, men in - camp offering to put in what time they could on patrol when on furlough and, in j addition, to endeavour to bring the ladies' • patrol up to strength. Messrs Evans and Thompson offered to carry out weeknight training at the river, and it was i decided to offer to train the Sea Scouts > in life saving. It was decided to obtain ’ a notice board warning bathers that no : patrol was on duty and advising the ; beach, for erection in the event of in- , sufficient personnel being available for ■ patrol. Miss Baker and Mr. A. Holder . were elected members of the club. The i election of officei's resulted as follows: i Patron, Mr. J. Link later; president. Mr. > R. O. Hornblow; vice-presidents, Messrs ■ S. R. Austin, C. R. Robotham, R. N. Speirs, L. G. Lowry, M.P., V. Rowlands, J. F. Grant and G. Watchorn. Votes of thanks were accorded ail who had assisted with the erection of the ladies’ dressing shed, particularly the Beach section of the Home Guard. Reporting to the Manawatu Rabbit Board, the inspector (Mr. D. It. Barron) said the weather during the month had been more favourable from a rabbit del struction point of view, and apart from • poisoning operations, a fairly lange j amount of fumigation had been carried out on a number of properties. Strychnine 1 carrot poisoning was not satisfactory ana “ trials were made over a fair area with 3 strychnine jam, but these were not successful. On such areas trapping had now begun, but it was yet too early to say if this would be satisfactory. This was the first experience that strychnine poisoning had been ineffective, and it was impossible to give any reason. It was not satisfactory even when no real growth of grass was in evidence. Fumigation, apart from the period of very windy weather, was able to be put in hand during the rest of the month. In spite of the shortage of labour, a fairly large area, including road-lines, had been cleared of l, noxious weeds. s For the euchre tournament held under e the auspices of the F. 8.1.5. and FreeL . holders’ Association prize-winners were: tr Ladies, Mrs. A. Winiata 1, Mrs. Downing 0 2; men, Mr. J. H. Smith 1, Mr. A. Winiata 2, who won the cut off with Mr. C. o Andersen. Beach Notes e Residents of the beach were deeply ,8 STieved to learn of the death on active O- servic e. of Sergeant Pilot Don Chrystall, f who, for many years, had been associat--j ed with the Methodist Church and Sunday School at the beach. Held in the r- highest esteem by all with whom he d came in contact, Don was exceedingly Popular with the children and, in his passing, they lose a leader whose place will be impossible to fill. The deepest }v sympathy of the beach residents goes out c- to Mr. and Mrs. Chrystall and family in •j. their bereavement. The friends of Mr. and Mrs. E. Px-att will regret to learn that their younger r _ son, Barry, lias had to enter the Palmer•e ston North Hospital. lL Mi's.
