Air-raid Alarms in Tokio

Grim Reminder That Americans Might Return

JAPS SAY 140 CHILDREN' WERE

Received Tuesday, 12.30 a.m. NEW YORK, April 20.

The New York Times says the Japanese people were reminded grimly that American bombers might return when two new air-raid alarms, each lasting two hours, were sounded on .Sunday in Tokio and other parts of the country. Tho New York Times’ Berne correspondent reports that the first apparent confirmation from a non-Axis source of the bombing of Tokio was contained in Swiss telegraphic agency messages from Tokio. They said that the only news which the Japanese allowed to be telephoned or telegraphed to Berne was that GO or more planes raided Japan and dropped many bombs without causing appreciable damage, except killing 140 school children in a Tokio suburb.

The Italian Gazetta del Popolo asserted editorially that the American planes which raided Japan were based on Russian territory and predicted “ realistic developments in RussoJapanese relations in consequence.*' It further cited Pravda’s “increasing menacing tone towards Japan” as proof of its allegations.
