Maoris to be Among First to Occupy Tokio

WHANGAREI, April 20. A declaration by the Prime Minister (Rt. Hon. P. Fraser) that the Maori troops would be among the first to occupy Tokio caused a spontaneous demonstration at a tribal gathering at Whirinaki yesterday, when 2000 honoured the memory of Captain Harding Leaf, a Ngapuhi chieftain, who died leading his men in Crete. The assembled people rose as one bodv, and, led by Sir Apirana Ngata, performed the traditional war haka “Kamate Hamate.” Sir Apirana said that tho Maoris would gladly fill a third Maori Battalion if needed and were prepared to make any sacrifice to win.
