Stars of the piece are Wilfred Lawson, Movita, Hollywood star, in her first British picture, and .Michael Rennie. evening to bo licld in the local hall on tho 23rd for the purposo of raising funds for tho patriotic committee. Just before afternoon Mrs. Smith demonstrated the cooking of food in a Maori oven (hangi or uuiu). The umu had been earlier prepared and the stones heated. Fellow members followed jirocecdings with intense interest and thanked Airs. Smith for her efforts. The school children and their teacher, Atiss Beverley Willis, were also present. Hostesses for the day were Mesdames Harkness, Hart and Hayes. The results of tho potato growing competition is not quite up to the usual standard undoubtedly the effects of the abnormally wet weather. However, 1311 b were weighed out with still some more to come in. Competitions resulted as follows: —Something new from something old, Mrs. O’Hagan 1, Mrs. Jensen 2, Mrs. Foot 3; premier bloom, Mrs. O’Hagan 1, Airs. Fa vail 2, Mrs. Enright 3; premier vegetable (silver beet), Mrs. Enright 1, Airs. McEwen 2, Airs. Foot 3. A bring and buy stall did good business. Three completed camouflage nets wero brought in by the different groups. All members arc very pleased with their handiwork. Four nets have now been forwarded to Airs. Scott, Feilding. Before closing the meeting Aliss Harkness expressed the sympathy of the Institute with a fellow member, Airs. Hugh Roberts, who is undergoing treatment in hospital at Rotorua. A ■ suggestion that a letter of good cheer be sent to Airs. Roberts, met with a [ chorus of approval. Airs. O’Hagan l undertook the loving task which in future will be a rule when any member

is pbliged to enter hospital. Next month’s programme:—Roll call, What I would like to buy from the Patriotic stall; competition, girdle scones; P.V., one potato (home grown); P. 8., Alichaelmns daisy (one stalk). Hostesses, Alesdames Hirschberg, Jensen and Aliss Hemmings. STANWAY

Miss Clere presided over a splendid attendance at the April meeting wficn members stood in silence in respeet to these members who had recently suffered bereavement. Airs. Evered gave the motto for the month. Aliss Clere welcomed the new secretary. Airs. V. B. Short. Notice was given of the annual council meeting to bo held at the Community Centre, Feilding. Miss Clere and Airs. A. Alarshall were elected delegates. An invitation was received to the Hnlcombe Institute birthday. Notice was also given that a farther quota of parcels would be packed at the local hall also of tho Oroua Federation Institute exhibition to be Btaged shortly in Feilding. An interesting talk on Mr. Winston Churchill was given by Miss Nola Jefferies. The demonstration on spinning by Mrs. and Miss Comfoot, of Halcombe, proved of outstanding interest to all and was closely followed. The different coloured wools and the finished garments knitted from these wools were greatly admired. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mrs. and Miss Comfoot, tho former being presented with a posy of dahlia*. The hostesses for the afternoon were Airs. C. Christian, Aliss D. Callinghaxn, Mrs. K. Green and Mrs. Hill. Tho results of the monthly competitions were as follows:—Arts and crafts, knitted pilchers, Airs. R. Hamilton 1, Airs. M. Winder 2; best bloom, Airs. Whitehead 1, Aliss Clere 2; cooking, 3 ginger nuts, Aliss N. Jefferies 1, Airs. Callingharn 2. Mrs. T. Allies was the winner of the mystery parcel. Tho hostesses for the May meeting will be Airs, and Aliss Craine, Airs. Shannon find Airs. Hamilton and tho competitions, a pair of child’s slippers (to be donated to the Lady Galway Guild), best bloom and apple pie (short postry), made in a saucer.

CHELTENHAAI Mrs. V. F. Short presided in April and welcomed two new members, Airs. Christiansen and Miss McFarlanc. During the first week in May an exhibition of work is to be held in Feilding of articles suitaoie for the Lady Galway Guild or articles made of wool and handcrafts. Articles may be for exhibition only or given for forwarding to suitable organisation, and any suitable articles should bo handed in to the federation. The golden thread on “Pioneer Tales” was given by Mrs. Saywell who told of early days iu Rangiwahia. A demonstration on floral work was given by Airs. Barltrop who arranged a beautiful sheaf of flowers and gift box of flowers and fruit. A letter from a soldier who had been the recipient of an institute parcel was read. Mrs. Kidson was thanked for packing ten parcels for forwarding through the Feilding Zone. Four other parcels were despatched. Tho golden thread for the coming year is to be an article from “Home and Country.” It has been decided not to print programmes this year so members are reminded that at next meeting it is hoped to have a travel talk and the competitions will be a gift box of flowers and a darn in a piece of woollen sock. This month the competition awards were as follow: Three African marigolds, Airs. Murdock 1, Brs. Oliver 2; apple jelly, Mrs. Wither 1, Mrs. Funnell 2.
