CONDITIONS IN GREECE Dated the 2nd May, 1941, Private Keith Cushing of the Dannevirke staff of Messrs. Barraud and Abraham, and son of Mr. T. Cushing, in a letter from a prisoner of war camp, said he was wondering what news had been received of our soldiers in Greece. Be writes: “We have not been able to find out how everything went towards the end as wo were holding the most forward position when the attack came and were kept too busy to think about other things ... I was acting •as an extra runner, our job being to keep G.H.Q. informed of what was happening in the front and then pass it back to other lines and H.Q. Well, l thought I would never get through that day, what with the blasting shells whistling overhead and German aircraft machine-gunning and dive-bomb-ing, and the noise in general. Jt was sure hell let loose. I have never hugged mother earth so much in all my life as l did tfcat day. I was unlucky in being up in the front line when we cut off, or I might have escaped with t.he rest. However, lam thankful to come through without a scratch, as some others did not . . . There were only two other Dannevirke boys with me— Jack Brighouse and one of the Bonds Crom Miller’s road, and the latter is with me in this camp and he is o.k. And Norm, Fryer, he has gone astray somewhere and has not been heard of yet. That day will easily be remembered as it was one day to Anzae Day . . . The Germans seem to be doing the best they can for us, but blimey, the rations are tough, especially meat, sugar and butter, while cigarettes are out altogether. We are allowed one letter, so pass on the news.” ,s -
