Valedictory

A social function took place in the Railway Hall on Saturday evening, when nearly 200 Palmerston North and visiting railway employees met to farewell Messrs. W. S. Thompson, J. P. Cassidy and E. H. Andrews, stationraaster, assistant-stationmaster and engine-driv-er respectively, who are retiring on superannuation after 40 years’ service. The presentation of two firesido chairs was made to Mr. Thompson by Mr. B. McManus, transport officer; a set of bowls was handed to Mr. Cassidy by Mr. A. C. Philpott, clerk; and a chiming clock was,given to Mr. Andrews by Mr. A. E. Johnson, president of the New Zealand Engine Drivers, Firemen and Cleaners’ Association. Souvenir autographed copies of the toast list were also presented to each of the guests of honour. Levick, staff superintendent, Wellington, and letters of appreciation of their co-opcralion and the harmonious relations wdiich always existed were re-

ceived by Messrs. Thompson and Cassidy from the Palmerston North branch of the N«Z. Carriers * Federation. Musical items were rendered by Hammond’s orchestra and Messrs. B. Hickford (Waipukurau), L. Wood, G. Hart, E. J. W. Foote, and D. Lloyd. The accompanist was Mr. I. Speight and community singing was led by Mr. Wood. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. E. Casey (General Manager of Railways), A. T. Parkes (district traffic manager, Wellington), Black (locomotive engineer, Wellington), G. B. Munro (locomotive foreman. Palmerston North), H. L- Langford (assistant locomotive foreman (Palmerston North), and Mr. A. Carruthers (Palmerston North).
