GIFTS OF SPITFIRES
(British Wireless) RUGBY, Aug. 10. Three new Spitfire squadrons of the Royal Air Force have been given the names of Indian provinces and States which have sent gifts of money to the Ministry of Aircraft Production.
The Punjab, which has already given a total of nearly £200,000, had that name allotted to a second R.A.F. fighter squadron, and money is still coming in from this province. The .first famous squadron, equipped with Hurricanes, was named in June last, and new Spitfires will soon be in action alongside their sister aircraft of the first Punjab squadron.
From the States of Baroda and Bhopal has come a gift of £104,000, and a newly-formed squadron of Spitfires is now carrying the name Baroda and Bhopal squadron. The name of Mysore is borne by another Spitfire squadron. Altogether, with the previous gifts from the various provinces and States, India has now contributed nearly £ 3-million through its aircraft funds for new R A F. fighters.
