Payment for Bobby Calves
Per Press Association
WELLINGTON, Aug. 7.
A price of two shillings per head will be paid to producers for bobby calves killed at the abattoirs or slaughterhouses this seuson. This is provided for by an amendment gazetted to-night to the Bobby Calf Marketing Regulations, 1939. Last season the'price paid was one of so much per pound for meat, but this seasou, with overseas marketing conditions uncertain, it has been decided to pay a flat rate per head for bobby calves leaving the right of offal and skins—which includes veils vital to the production of rennet for cheesemaking —to the producers themselves. This arrangement assures producers of a return at least adequate to warrant forwarding bobby calves to freezing works. Had no such provision been made, there would have been a risk of the calves being slaughtered on farms with the resultant threat to rennet supplis, which are essential to the increased cheese production sought during the coming season. It is necessary for an adequate supply* of rennet to have all bobby calves killed at the works and the effect of the amending regulations is to implement the Government's undertaking to the meat industry* that this would be carried out on a satisfactory basis.
