Te Arakura
(From Own Correspondent.) A pleasant evening was spent on June 5 when a complimentary social and dance was tendered to Corporal Wereta, Privates John Tantrum and S. Sutherland. Mr. G. M. Rennie, accompanied by Mrs. Rennie, represented the K.S.A., Palmerston North, and extended greetings to the guests of the evening. Mr. J. M. Durio expressed good wishes on behalf of the Maori race. In making the presentation of wristlet watches to the three soldiers, Mr. J. J. Hume (chairman of the Patroitic Committee) mentioned that Corporal J. Wereta had seen previous service in the last great war and that Private Sutherland’s father had at that time been the only Maori . airman serving in the Air Force. He extended to the soldiers wishes for a safe return. The conclusion of the presentation was followed by a spirited haka by a line of Maoris of all ages ‘who were loudly cheered at the conclusion. Dancing was interspersed by some enjoyable items, those contributing to the entertainment being Mr. G. M. Whitelock (vocal solos), accompanied by Miss Nola Hume; Mr. and Mrs. Prince and Mr. J. Oliver, instrumental trio; Young Maori Party, a series of action songs and poi dances. Messrs. G. Sanne and T. Lawton were MsC. Personal Word has been received by Mr. and Mrs. G. Firth that their son, Colin, who served with the forces in Greece and Crete, is safe and well. Messrs. N. and H. Pedersen and C. S. Avery left on Friday to spend a holiday in Auckland. Mr. P. Hansen has returned home from a holiday in Auckland. Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Wilkins are away on their annual holiday. Mr. J. W. R. Stewart has returned homo from Auckland. Mrs. H. Pedersen and her two small daughters are staying with Mr. and Mrs. F. Klink, Pohangina. Mr. D. Lewer has returned home from hospital. News has been received that Private Reuben Merritt, nephew of Mr. J. M. Durie, who was with the forces in Greece, is safe and well. Mr. John Hodges, Wellington, is staying with Mr. and Mrs. D. Lewer. Mrs. Frank Page and her two chil* dren, of Dargavillc, are spending a holiday with Mr. and Mrs. G. Firth. Mrs. A. Lewis has returned home from Wellington where she was the guest of Mrs, E. H. Haythorne. Mrs. J. J. Hume has staying with her, her sister, Mrs. A. Ranford, Palmerston North.
Miss Dulcie Lewer has returned to Wellington.
