Foxton

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Miss Vida Barron, Lecturer in Modern Languages at Otago University, Dunedin, is a visitor to Foxton and is the guest’ of Mr. and Mrs. D. R. Barron, of Robinson Street. Mr. and Mrs. A. Kendrick Maidens, of Paliiatua, and their infant son, Robert, spent the week-end with Mrs. Maidens’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. R. Barron, of Robinson Street. Mrs. V. Husband and family, of Lady’s Mile, have returned home from a holiday visit to Welington. Mesdames J. and G. Newton returned to Foxton last week from Rotorua, where Mrs. Newton, Snr., has been undergoing treatment. Councillors Sworn In The “swearing-in” ceremony in connection with the new Council took place on Monday evening when there were present the Mayor (Mr. M. E. Perreau) and Councillors L. Fletcher, W. R. Byne, D. Brooks, E. Titcombe, D. R. Barron, F. Robinson, R. Cochran and J. F. Riches. An apology for absence was received from Or. H. H. Podmore. The Mayor made reference to the fact that Private H. Podmore, son of Cr. and Mrs. H. H. Podmore, had that day been reported missing. He said that the sympathy not only of the Council but also of citizens of Foxton as a whole would go out to Mr. and Mrs. Podmore and family in the bad news they had received. Cr. D. Brooks, in moving a motion of sympathy, said that there was nothing more trying for parents than the uncertainty in which Mr. and Mrs. Podmore were placed. Cr. F. Robinson seconded the motion. The Clerk then read the formal declaration of the result of the poll and announced that Mr. Perreau had been returned unopposed as Mayor. Councillors then signed their declaration forms which they read aloud before handing over to the Mayor. The Mayor congratulated them on their success at the poll and expressed the hope that the ensuing term of office would prove as happy and profitable as the last. “You have much to do,” he said. “The next three years will undoubtedly be the most momentous in the history of Foxton and the world but I feel confident that you will all work in harmony for the ultimate good of all.” Mr. D. Brooks was elected deputy mayor on the motion of Cr. Barron, who commented that Cr. Brooks had filled that office during the past three years with distinction. Crs. F. Robinson and \V. R. Byne were elected to Council’s representatives on the Foxton Fire Board.
