British Hospital Ship Attacked

EIGHT NEAR-MISSES (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, May 21. A German attack on the hospital ship Aba (7937 tons), formerly an Elder, Dempster and Co. steamer, followed the sending of a wireless message “Am being attacked by enemy planes.” Steaming to the scene, British warships met the hospital ship after three and a half hours, and found that she had escaped despite eight near misses. Forty minutes afterwards, eight |Ju87’s returned to the attack, divebombing both the hospital ship and one warship. A dazzling light made it hard to fix the target with anti-air-craft gunfire, but no direct hits were scored on either ship, although there were several near-misses. A riddled enemy plane was later seen plunging into the sea.
