Strenuous Fighting Continues
LONDON, May 21. Military circles in Cairo late to-night said that fairly strenuous fighting was still going on in Crete. It is learned in London that the Germans have not attempted naval landings, but have attempted landings from small boats. Places where such landings are possible are well known to the British, who have been there for months, and to the Greek command, making successful landings on any large scale most hazardous. German reports suggest that strong British naval forces are active in the East Mediterranean. The German radio claimed that bombers secured direct hits on a battleship, five cruisers and a destrover west of Crete.
“It has been a hard day,” said General Freyberg, the Commander-in-Chief of the forces in Crete, in a cable to the New Zealand Prime Minister, Mr. P. Fraser, thus crisply arid unemotionally outlining the operations of the second day of the invasion. He added: “Our troops are fighting superbly.”
