Women’s Institutes

NEWBURY The hostesses in May were Mesdames MaeAuley and C. Coilins, Mrs. Death presiding. Mesdames Collins and Caverhill, of Rongotca, paid an official visit from the federation executive and gave interesting talks on. recent activities. The secretary stated that both the garden party and the dance held recently for soldiers’ comforts had proved financial successes. The parcels forwarded last month for soldiers from the district were in the hands of Mesdames MaeAuley and Thompson, while Mesdames Gore and Death are responsible for those of the current month. Tho executive members judged the competitions and congratulated the members on the high standard of the entries. Results were: —Hussifs, Mrs. Lancaster 1, Mrs. Gore 2, Miss Lynch 3; best flower, Mrs. Shaw 1, Mrs. Gore 2, Mrs. Lancaster 3. The competitions for next month will bo a pair of boy’s shorts made from used material and best flower from the garden. The hostesses for next month are to be Mesdames Lancaster and Lovelock. At the conclusion of the meeting a presentation was made to Mrs. Shaw for the very valued guidance she had g\ven to the institute during her many years as president. Mrs. Shaw, in replying, thanked the members for their kindly thought and congratulated the new president on the successful opening of the year which she knew -would give great pleasure to the women of the district. In view of the combined institutes’ visit to the Chateau Tongariro, the next meeting will be held on June 25 instead of June 18.
