St Andrew’s Ladies’ Guild
The May meeting of St. Andrew’s Ladies’ Guild held yesterday in the Memorial Hall drew the usual large attendance, and an interesting programme had been arranged. Mrs. M. Aitehison presided and in extending a welcome mentioned particularly the visitors, including Mr. A. G. A. Baigent, also Mr. A. Wylie, session representative to the guild. She expressed regret in the absence of Bcv. ,T. and Mrs. Hubbard, the latter being indisposed. Chrysanthemums in tawny and gold predominated in the decorations on the stage and in the hall with berries and trailing fern and a lonely bowl of lavender ericas, carnations and chrysanthemums graced the president’s table, Mrs. Galland being responsible for the decorations. Vocal solos by Mesdames T. Simpson and J. D. Anderson were much appreciated, Mrs. R. C. Donald being the accompanist, and further pleasure was provided by Lois Lind, of Shannon with recitations. * An appeal was made for members each to knit a garment for refugees and attention was drawn to the need lor assistance in the knitting branch in finishing off the woollen leggings that are replacing the soldiers’ puttees. Mr. Baigent ohose as his subject “Two European Outposts of Freedom, ’’ prominent in the news to-day, from his own close study of the literature and language of Iceland and Greece, which proved of absorbing interest to his audience. Mr. Wylie conveyed the thanks of the members to the speaker and also to the artists. Mrs. Aitehison added her thanks also to the hostesses and tea helpers. Door hostesses were Mesdames J. Galland and J. Linklater and tea helpers Mesdames W. Allan, Morrison, Forbes, .T. Cooper, J. Marshall, D. F. Smillie, L. W. Fraser, Swan and G. White.
