Reservists’ Appeals

ARMED FORCES BOARD The sittings of the No. 3 Armed forces Appeal Board were continued on Wednesday and. yesterday, when the following additional appeals were heard, the grounds being public interest or undue hardship, or both, except where stated otherwise:— A. F. Martin, Ltd., appealed for Lawrence William Martin. Mr. L. Laurenson, for the reservist, stated he was employed on military work. The appeal was heard in private, and was adjourned sine die, subject to reservist, remaining in his present position and joining tne Home Guard. The Hoiben Electrical and Precision Engineering Co. appealed for Neil Hunter Kirk. Mr. L. R. Hoiben, manager of the company, said the reservist was employed on a cylinder-grinding machine which was used, oil many Government contracts. Adjourned lor six months. Wirernu Ferguson McLean was appealed for by the District Public Trustee (Mr. C. Freyberg), who said the reservist was a farm manager for an estate. The property-was on hilly country and could only be farmed by a young active man. Adjourned sine die, subject to the reservist remaining in his present position. The Palmerston North City Council appealed for Paul Ferguson, Diesel engineer, and the reservist also appealed. Adjourned till next sittings. A number of farm employees also appealed, these being:—John Charles Hill (Mr. G. Tremaine); adjourned sine die, conditionally on the reservist joining the Home Guard. Owen John Jones, also appeal by Chris Evans Jones (Mr. L. Laurenson); adjourned sine die, the reservist to remain in the Home Guard. Arthur George Smith, also appeal by Bruce Raymoro Henderson Smith (Mr. C. E. Taylor); adjourned till next sittings. Robert Janies Telford, also appeal by David Telford (Mr. H. R, Cooper); adjourned until the next sitting. Charles Henry Setoelin, appealed for by Carl Henri Hljamer Larsen; adjourned sine die, the reservist being transferred to the Territorial Force for three months’ training.

The following decisions, which had been reserved, were also announced on cases where farm hands had appealed on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship: Gordon Lewis Blair, adjourned sine die provided he remains in his present employment; Lincoln George Campbell, appeal dismissed, appellant not to be called up before Juno 30; Gordon Mitchell, adjourned for three months to enable appellant to obtain a. substitute on the farm.

In the appeal of M. H. Hodgson, of Palmerston North, appellant stated that, being married with one child, he was not a member of the class called up. The appeal was allowed. C. A. Romley, of Ashhurst (Mr. W. L. FitzherUert), was granted a postponement of service until the end of September, for family reasons. Three appeals were made by the New Zealand (Timber) Boxmakers ’ Association on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship, the ballotees being C. A. Peart, L. Hart and J. F. Charles, of Palmerston North. Mr. A. Seed, of Wellington, secretary of the association, submitted evidence and the board’s decision was reserved.

K. V. Townshend, of Palmerston North, was appealed for by H. E. Townshend, Ltd. (Mr. F. J. Oakley). On the grounds of works of national interest, on defence and primary production, the appeal was adjourned for six months.

S. W. Port was appealed for by Mrs. A. M. Elcox (Mr. A. M. Ougloy) on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship. The appeal was dismissed, the reservist not to be called up before August 31. Several dairy farmers anej. farm employees appealed on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship. These cases were: R. A, Will, of Eongotea (Mr. J. A. Grant); adjourned sine die, conditionally on reservist remaining in the Home Guard. F. G. Holt (Rongotea), decision reserved. L. F. Hart, also appeal by Mrs. M. O. Hart, of Bulls (Mr. R. Maekay); adjourned sine die, subject to reservist joining the Homo Guard within seven days. «S. H. Last-Harris, also appeal by Mrs. R-Last-Harris (Mr. Maekay); adjourned sine die, subject to reservist remaining in The Home Guard. E. R. Caple (Mt. Stewart); appeal dismissed, reservist not to be called up before July 31. V. J. Coombes, also appeal by H. E.*Dovey; appeal- dismissed, reservist not to De called up before July.3o. P. R. B. Hansen, also appeal by C. V. Hansen; ad journed sine die, and the reservist was transferred to the Territorial Force ±‘ot three months’ training in May, June

and July next year. R. E. Cleverley, also appeal toy J. W. Cleverley; adjourned sine die, and the reservist was transferred to. the Territorial Force foi three months’ training iu May, June and July next year. Reserved decision was given in a case which was before the board. The Superior Oil Co. of New Zealand, Ltd., appealed for Stuart Onslow Monro, John Ross Butters, Johu Rattray Ower and Michael John Alwyn MeGreevy on tfie grounds .of public interest. Mr. R. E. Turner, managing-director ,of the company, supporting the appeals, stated that Munro was a member of the drill crew and would be difficult to replace. He had crpecialised training, which was

a necessity on. account, ul the danger involved, both iu regard to life and property. Twenty-one out of the company’s staff of 43 were Americans, and it was necessary to train. New Zealander-'. Butters had charge of the record-ing-instruments and this w r as an important aspect of the wprk; there were 108 geophones to be looked after and it was a specialised job. Ower was a Canadian, here on loan from the American company. He was a geologist and it was absolutely Impossible to replace him. MeGreevy was the mechanic. He, however, was not now eligible for overseas serivee on account of the medical grading. The appeal iu respect of Munro was dismissed; that in respect of Butters -was also dismissed, reservist not to be called up before August. 31; the appeal for Ower was adjourned sine die; Anderson was transferred to the Territorial Force for three l- months’ training in June, July and August aDd the appeal adjourned sine die.
