Galloping took place on the outside of the course proper, with the going heavy. Royal Star II (Cole) ran half a mile under a good hold in 53 4-ssec. Although he is taking time to get back to his best, the English-bred gelding should be seen to advantage from now Val Pere (Cole) traversed five furlongs in I.BJ. He is reported to be showing promise in private as a jumper. Filbert (Mills) and Kena (Russell) were on terms throughout six furlongs in 1.25 3-ssec. Kena has recovered from the leg injury which prevented him from racing at Egmont, and if the ground is easy on Saturday he will contest the Foxton Cup. Filbert is in capital order. An indifferent start marred a five furlongs gallop by Night Ray (Holland) and Desert Tide (Graham), the former securing a break of half-a-dozen lengths to be going easily a length in front at the finish in 1.9. Night Ray ran good races at Egmont recently and he may be an early winner. Desert Tide and Kena are to leave for Awapuni to-day (Wednesday), both being engaged at the Foxton and Wanganui meetings. Gitana Lass (Ryan) and Greek Anthos (Toki), a two-year-old by Tho Creek out of the Arausio mare Flower, in H. Scally’s stable, traversed half a mile in 53 3-ssec. Winsome Lu (Reilly) ran the same distance without being hurried in 54 l-ssec. With the tracks now to her liking, she is coming to band rapidly and promises to be fairly forward for iho Wellington meeting in July. Barry Bov (Holland) sprinted half a mile in 53 2-ssec., and Star Mark (Holland) recorded 55?$sec. FROM VARIOUS SOURCES Hastings trainer G. W. B. Greene would have no reason to regret his decision to take a team of horses to the Waikato meeting at Te Rapa, for he secured two wins with Black Majesty and one with Battlegain, in addition to getting second money in the To Rapa Steeplechase with Dozie Boy. Black Majesty returned a double-figure dividend when he won the concluding event on Saturday, so stable connections must have had a profitable meeting. Black Majesty (10.10) and Battlegain (10.4) share topweight honours in the Jervois Handicap at Ellerslie, and on their recent record they appear entitled to the honour. At Hawera, O. Cox is handling a wellgrown rising two-vear-old filly by Broie fort from Lady Dilworth, an unraced mare by Peach Brandy. She will race in the interests of Mr. H. E. Card, Wanganui. A recent addition to W. Grindlay’s team at Hawera is a bay yearling colt by Theio out of Tea Doll, who will carry the colours of Mr. W. C. Simson. owner of Settlement prior to his salo early in his career to a South Island sportsman.
