Education by Picture

LIBRARY EXTENSION SERVICE The first screening of educational sound films for the 1941 season was held at the Little Theatre last evening. Thanks to the Dominion Museum and the Palmerston North Library Extension Service the screening of educational films, which proved so popular last year, are to be continued during the present season. The programme presented to an enthusiastic audience was particularly well chosen and maintained, perhaps even improved upon, the high standard established last year. To pick out any films for special mention is not easy when all are good, but the story of '* l Coal” from the submerged forest of 250,000,000 years ago to the pit-head, was really an outstanding picture. It not only told tho story; it gave tho atmosphere and did it so well one almost smelt and Lasted the coal dust. “Food and Nutrition” showed by ingenious moving diagrams the fate of ono food and demonstrated clearly how far the science of nutrition has developed in recent years. Malnutrition through ignorance of what to eat would vanish were the facts demonstrated in this fascinating picture more widely known. Tho mechanically-minded were intrigued by the “Machine Maker.” Precision engineering in the manufacture of machine tools was shown by precision photography. The dependence of modern mass production on' machine tools is well known, and Germany knows the need of these precise instruments of manufacture, but to see them made and to learn tho extremely fino tolerances allowed was definitely an event of importance to many. For the present season screenings will be given on the third Wednesday of each month until October 22, the next film evening being on June 18. Palmerston North is again indebted to Mr. J. T. Salmon, Entomologist of the Dominion Museum, Wellingtofa, for an interesting and instructive evening.
