Britain Wants Heavy Bombers
200 Would Smash U-Boats AMERICAN IMPRESSED BY BRITISH MOKAJUE United Press Association—By Electrlo Telegraph—Copyright. Received Friday, 1.15 a.m. NEW YORK, May 15. The Times’ Washington correspondent says the Under-Secretary lor the Navy (Mr. Forrestal) ha 3 returned from Britain and reported the results of his investigations to President Roosevelt. It is reliably learned that he said Britain’s greatest need was heavy bombers to combat the U-boats and thereby rendering American convoys unnecossary. She also needs ships and tanks, indicating that an invasion is still feared. Mr. Forrestal added that British morale was so high tha*- an attempt to negotiate peace wduld precipitate a revolution. Furthermore, public confidence in Mr. Churchill is at its highest. The R.A.F. have greatly improved the night defences and hope to overcome the night raid menace by bringing down ten per cent, cf the raiders.
The New York Times says Administration circles believe that 200 heavy bombers would permit Britain to smash the U-boats and it is likely that such numbers can be supplied from America before the end of the summer.
