Mr. J. Hodgens’ Services to City
Air. J. Hodgens, M.P., needs no introduction to Palmerston electors. He is a present member of the City Council, being Labour’s only representative, nnd has given longer service in this position than any sitting councillor. In 1935 Mr. Hodgens was elected to represent this electorate in Parliament, and he retained his seat in 1938 by a clear majority of more than 2000 over his opponent. For a great many years he has represented electors on the Alanawat.u-Oroua Tower Board, and the Palmerston North Hospital Board, and has rendered good service in both these positions, not only to citizens of Palmerston, but also to residents in the wider areas which these bodies administer. In Parliament he is closely associated with the Ministry of Industries and Commerce, and for some years has been chairman of the special Parliamentary Committee set up in connection with this Department. The election of further Labour representatives on the City Council will be a mark of appreciation for the lifetime of service that Mr. Hodgens has freely given to the city.
