APPEALS BEFORE MAN-POWER COMMITTEE Mr. T. L. Seddon presided at a meeting of No. 6A Man-power Committee in Palmerston North on Wednesday. Associated with him were Messrs. J. C. Young and C. R. Murphy. Air. H. J. Worthington represented the Crown. All the appeals lodged were based on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship and were as follow: Henry Albert Henson, dairy farmer.— Adjourned sine die, in view of appellant’s medical grading. Alexander Scotland, ‘ stud stockman, appeal by trustees of tho estate of Ernest Short (Mr. J. Graham). Mr. Short, a trustee, stated that the estate was to export a large number of cattle to South Africa shortly. It was exceedingly difficult to obtain a man with a knowledge of stud stock.—Decision reserved. James Alexander Florence, labourer and contractor (Mr. Graham). —Dismissed, appellant not to be called up before June 30. Tho appeals of David George Good, student, and Kenneth John Mitchell, agricultural student, which were adjourned at tho last meeting of the committee, were dismissed, the reservists not to be called up for service before September 30. Evidence on their behalf was given by Professor W. Riddet. George Harris, dairy fanner (Mr. J. A. Grant). It was stated that appellant was a member of the Home Guard and served for a year and a-half with tlio Rifle Brigade in the Great War. Appellant said that ho had increased production and it was possible he would he making a change over to cheese shortly. Ho had a brother who was dependent upon him.—Adjourned for a month for the appellant to try to obtain Substitute labour and also to obtain a medical certificate as to his brother ’s health. Patrick Joseph Hanlon, farmer (Mr. W. L. Fitzherbert). Appellant stated that ho managed a mixed farm at Ashhurst and that it was exceedingly difficult to obtain labour for such a farm. — Decision reserved. John Alexander Kilsby, farmer (Mr. R. W. Rapley). Appellant's statement showed that ho had five properties, which were farmed as separate units—three at Ohau, one at Shannon and one at Pahautanui. {Stud breeding was carried on also. He was a difector of the Kuku-Manakau dairy factory and it had received notification of a possible change-over to cheese.—Adjourned sine die. Herbert Kersol, builder (Air. J. M. Gordon). —Adjourned until July 31. John Terence O’Regan, dairy farmer, apfieal by Airs. Wilkelmina O’Regan.— Adjourned for 14 days. Edward John Fuller Grigg, footwear manager, appeal by Cyril V. Day. Appellant’s evidence showed that the reservist had control of threo shops—one in Levin and tws> in Palmerston North. He had been drawn in an overseas ballot and as a result of not being passed for active service he had been notified that he was to go to Fort Dorset for tho duration of the war.—Decision was reserved. Leo Newlands Boniface, journalist,
appeal by Ernest Gordon Dobson (Mr. J. M. Gordon). —Dismissed, appellant not to bo called before July 31. Algar Roy Douglas Mason, appeal by appellant and the Summit Mineral Stock Food Company. The secretaary of the company (Mr. G. R. M. Allan) stated that the company could make temporary arrangements if given time. , —Dismissed, the reservist not to be called up before July 31. Arthur James Burt, electrician, appealed for by Joseph Lennon.— Adjourned for three months.
