Germany Declares Red Sea a War Zone
MAKES NO DIFFERENCE TO AMERICA Received Wednesday, 9.20 p.m. LONDON, May 14. It Is Qfficially stated in Berlin that owing to the development of the war in the Eastern Mediteranean the Red Sea has become an area of operations for the German forces. Any ship sailing in this territory risks destruction by mines and other means of war. A Washington message says Germany’s designation of the Red Sea as a war zone is unlikely to alter President Roosevelt’s recent proclamation that the area is safe for American shipping. While President Roosevelt is required to proclaim combat zones around belligerent countries he is only compelled, tp establish them elsewhere when actual danger exists. TMs danger is not expected until and if Germany is able to achieve military control of the Red Sea. Informed officials in Washington said to-day that President Roosevelt’s pool of 2,000,000 tons of shipping for immediate service to Britain will be reached by the middle of June. It includes idle foreign vessels, six American ships under construction, and 50 inter-coastal vessels.
