Sympathy with Cr. D. Collis, who recently met with, an accident and is confined to his bed, was expressed by the Kairanga County Council yesterday.

Mrs. C. Anderson, Weston Avenue, has received the glad news that her son, Sergeant Ken Anderson, is safe and well, his many friends will be glad to learn.

Tribute to the services rendered by Mr. J. Linklater, who has represented the Kairanga County on the Foxtou Harbour Board for 23 years and who is not seeking re-election, was paid by the chairman of the County Council (Cr. W. R. Hopcroft) yesterday and on his motion appreciation of Mr. Linklater’s services was placed on record.

Mr. and Mrs. F. L. Orchard, of 11 Matamau Street, Palmerston North, have received advice of the fortunate escape of their son, Leading-Aircraft-man R. L. W. Orchard, of the R.N.Z.A.F., wdien a plane in which he was flying crashed near Montreal, Canada," last month. The pilot, a Canadian, was killed. Leading-Aircraft-man Orchard suffered bruises and cuts only. Information that Sergeant-Observer Basil Openshaw, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Openshaw, Marton, was the top ranking graduate of a class of New Zealand airmen who completed their training last March at a school in Canada is contained in the St. Thomas Times-Journal, a newspaper published in St. Thomas, Ontario. Before joining the Royal New Zealand Air Force last year, Sergeant-Observer Openshaw, who is 33 years of age, was a wireless operator for seven years on the sea-going staff of the Union Steamship Company.
