To Ease Death Duties

No Government is more hard-pressed in search for money than that of Great Britain. Yet with characteristic British sense of fairness it aims not to profit from the war and the numerous deaths of young men that it is liable to bring, cutting short their “normal expectation of life.”

To counter this there has introduced a policy at Home of discounting death duties upon estates of those killed on active service in accordance with their expectation of life (actuarily based upon the deceased’s age). Death duties on present day rates are liable “to smash” an estate in coming quickly in succession. As, for example, a father may leave an estate to his son and then that son may be a war casualty.

Here is a matter that could and should be taken up by cur Chamber of Commerce. We feel sure that were the suggestion placed before the Government by such a responsible body it would amend the succession and estate duty laws to permit of discounting as at Home,
