Women’s Division of The Farmers’ Union

PALMERSTON NORTH BRANCH At the first meeting of the new year of the Palmerston North branch of the Women’s Division held yesterday at Messrs. Collinson and Cunninghame’s, Mrs. W. F. Field (president) welcomed old and new members and expressed the hope that, the coming year would bring happy and useful association. She felt that in the coming months the division would be called upon to help country women more and more and it was necessary to stand together. She further explained that it wafi proposed to hold a general meeting each month and that the executive would be called together for any special business. The president, secretary and advisory members alone would deal with'subsidisation of housekeepers and their employment. Correspondence which is to be submitted to the provincial executive for consideration was before the meeting, also the agenda for the annual general meeting of the Wellington Central provincial to be held in Marton, and the minutes of the last executive meeting at Taihape. Mrs. A. S. Hely, tutor for the W.E.A. gave notification of the programme for 1941 session and intimation of services available. A circular letter from the Women's War Service Auxiliary set out requirements for affiliation as demanded by headquarters, Mrs. Field further explaining the position that lists of members and addresses ivere required. The question was raised as to what constituted a quorum for the executive, it being decided after some discussion to leave this to the executive to finalise. Miss D. Cunninghame was elected a new member. Mrs. Field reported that two housekeepers had been engaged in the district, one still being on duty. Mr 3. Claplmm, Manawatu Heads, conveyed heartfelt gratitude by letter for the services of a housekeeper. Mrs. Montgomery reported for the sewing circle which was busily engaged for the refugees, and her attendance at the parcels committee. Mrs. Muir offered assistance at the patriotic shop this week. Mrs. Nicholson was nominated, subject ttp her acceptance, as the representative on the parcels branch of the Manawatu Patriotic Committee, Mrs. Montgomery feeling some-one else should have a turn. Miss Matheson reported on the canteen service provided by members at the Showgrounds. It was decided to send parcels to members' relatives overseas. At next monthly meeting ways and means of augmenting the funds will be connidered and ti e Dirthday will bo celebrated in June. Remits for the annual conference in Wellington in July were before the meeting.
