Manawatu Women’s Patriotic Committee

GOOD REPORTS FROM BRANCHES The monthly meeting of the Manawatu Women’s Patriotic Conamittee was held in the Mayoress’s room yesterday, Mrs. A. E. Mansford in the chair, also present being Mesdames G. C. Petersen (Lady Galway Guild), K- Manning (knitting and hussifs branch), S. G. Northey (parcels branch), W. J. Phillips (deputising for Mrs. E. C. Barnett, Patriotic Shop) and D. Galbraith (secre-tary-treasurer). There were apologies from Mesdames C. King (Silver Thimble Fund), E. C. Barnett (Patriotic Shop) and N. V. Ballinger (A.N.A. Jlub). Referring to the flower day effort, which had realised £BB 7s 6d, Mrs. Mansford considered it a wonderful result, the ladies concerned being deserving of heartiest congratulations. Thanks were due to the City Council for carting. A gratifying feature had been the happy co-operation of all concerned. Sub-committee reports w r ere presented as follow: — I Patriotic Shop.—The satisfactory sum of £149 14s lid was raised during the month of April, bringing the total to I date to £2813 12s Id. Arrangements i had been made with various organisai tions for the conduct of the shop for some time ahead, and the steady injtorest of the public is evidenced by the many donations both in cash and kind which were being received. It was reported that Messrs. Howard Abbott (Manufacturing) Limited had donated the divan bed which had been on display in the window of Messrs. Collinson and Cunninghame, Limited, to be raffled. A welcome was extended to Mrs. Hales Walker from the recentlyformed Knick-Knack Club. This club consisted of a band of ladies* who met each week to make articles for sale tor patriotic purposes. The club had offered to stock and conduct the Patriotic Shop for a week in December. Knitting and hussiffs. —During April the branch had been working consistently, the following articles having been dispatched:—6B scarves, 77 balaclavas, 77 pairs of mittens, 69 hussifs, eight polo jumpers, while 24 donations had been made to soldiers on leave. Four pegg'y-square quilts were ready to be sent to the Lady Galway Guild. Thanks were due to Mrs. Furneaux and her working bee, to Mrs. Jackson for lining quilts, and the members who came out and assisted on flower day. Mrs. Woodham had been appointed secretary, vice Mrs. Drake (resigned). Parcels branch.—The monthly meeting was held on May 7, Mrs. S. G. Northey ip. the chair. Mrs. Mansford and Mrs. Galbraith, president and secretary of the Women’s Patriotic Committee, wehe among those present. Members spake of .the canteen work at the A.N.A. club and how it was appreciated by the boys in uniform, the parcels committee having serviced the club on April 18, 19 and 20. Mrs. Northey thanked the members of the committee for their help and co-operation in assisting with the flower day held recently for patriotic funds. With each layette there were outfits for mothers which included heavy and light dressing gowns anyone would be glad to receive. The financial statement to April dll, presented by Mrs. Galbraith, disclosed that £3727 11s had been raised, including £BB 7s 6d from the flower day effort. . . .. A recommendation from the Patriotic Shop Committee that £2OO be allocated to Zone D for the benefit of the men of the fighting services was approved. An informal discussion took place regarding the working of the A.N.A. Club, Mrs. Northey giying an outline of the general activities, which were considered most satisfactory, showing that the i presence of the women at the club was I much appreciated
