Councillor V. Smith Retires

VALEDICTORY REFERENCES “I ask Cr. Smith to accept my grateful thanks for his services to this, town," said tho Mayor (Air. T. L. Seddon) at last evening’s meeting of tho Feilding Borough Council when referring to the fact that Cr. Smith was not seeking re-election. “I do not know tho period of years he has served. It is considerable for ho has sat undAr six mayors. Fearless, tenacious in debate, always courteous, from the nature of his business and his lengthy attachment to tho town well informed as to borough needs, he has been a useful councillor. Ho retires full of honour, laden with the good wishes of his fellow councillors for the health and happiness of himself and his wife and the gratitude of the citizens ho has served so well. An expression of that gratitude is seen in the fact that he has been returned unopposed to the hospital board where he has rendered yc.oman service for this borough," he concluded. ■Cr. A. C. McCorkindale moved that the council place on record the valuable service Tendered the ratepayers of Feilding and to this council by Cr. V. E. Smith during the 20 years he had been on the council. Cr. W. W. Andrews seconded the motion and was supported by Cr. P. G. Guy who said that the tree planting in Feilding’s streets which Cr. Smith initiated in Denbigh Street would become a monument to Cr. Smith. Tho motion was carried with applause. Replying, Cr. Smith said that he found it difficult to return thanks. He had decided that it was time he had a rest from his civic duties and it was hard to cut adrift from such pleasant associations. He had sat under six mayors and would say that Air. Seddon was> equal to any of them. The patience shown him by all, including tho town clerk and borough engineer, was deeplyappreciated. ‘"Thank you," ho concluded.
