Power Dive Speed of 620 m.p.h.

The British reported recently that an American-built Aircobra had been piloted 620 miles an hour during a 21,000 ft power dive, a new speed record. The previous mark was 575 miles an hour, achieved about a year ago by Lloyd Childs, Curtiss test pilot, by % Curtiss P4O. Airacobras, made by Bell Aircraft Corporation, of Buffalo, art one of America’s most formidable pursuit planes. They are unconventional in construction, with engines—liquidcooled Allison, 1190 h.p.—placed behind the pilots. Their top speed in level flight is about 390 miles an hour. Th# new dive speed record is of little military importance, however, because suck bpeed is not required in any military manoeuvre. But it does testify to th# ship’s ruggodness, for such speed would tear the wings off a plane aerodynamically faulty.
