Milk Consumption In Great Britain
PREPARING FOR SHORTAGE NEXT WINTER (British Official Wireless.) Received Wednesday, 9.20 p.m. RUGBY, April 29. Though milk consumption in Britain in the past year has tisen nearly 20 per cent, above the pre-war figure there is no likelihood of any shortage in the next six months, the Minister of Food said to day, but, Lord Woolton added, with something approaching certainty at that rate there would be a shortage next winter. Lord Woolton was explaining why the Government preferred to lot dairymen distribute one-seventh less milk in the light of their knowledge of customers' rquiremeuts rather than introduce uniform rationing which, he said, would give each person in the country about two-fifths of a pint daily. The restriction during summer will allow a surplus for the manufacture of cheese and for making condensed milk for winter use.
