Clipper Reaches Auckland.
With 28 passengers as well as mail and freight, the Honolulu Clipper reached Auckland from San Francisco yesterday afternoon after a normal trip. Captain McGlohn. was in. command. His passengers, most of whom are bound for destinations beyond New Zealand, included four small children. City Voters. Those listed under the qualification of ratepayers number 6912, an increase of 259 in the three years; and those under the residential qualification total 7753, or only 78 more than in 1938. Ten Women Police to be Appointed Tho appointment of women police was announced lasit night by the Prime Minister (Rt. Hon. P. Fraser) who is also Minister in Charge of Police. Ten are to be appointed for a start. Three will bo stationed in Wellington and in Auckland and two in Christchurch and in Dunedin. The women selected will first bo given a three mouths’ course of training starting on June 2 aud will servo iu a probationary capacity before being considered for permanent appointment. Death of Auckland Centenarian. One of Auckland’s oldest residents, Miss Elizabeth Tyler Smith, of Epsom, died yesterday in hor 101st year. Miss Smith celebrated hor 100th birthday last Juno when she received messages from the King and Queen, from tho Governor-General and other notabilities. Born Iu Worcestershire, England, iu 1840, Miss Smith came to New Zealand with her brother 15 years later. Until after her 100th birthday she used to visit Queen Street occasionally to do her shopping. She also enjoyed reading and her hearing was excellent. Miss Smith was the youngest of a family of eight aud although some of them lived until well past 80, none of her close relatives approached her record for longevity.
