STRIKE ORDER IN CANADIAN DEFENCE PLANTS

(Rec. 30, 3.15) MONTREAL, April 29. “Work holidays,” affecting 7000 employees in Canadian defence industries were ordered by the Steelworkers’ Organising Ccmmittee of the Congress of Industrial Organisation to-day in a protest alleging company violations of Board of Conciliation rulings.

The holidays will affect two major steel companies, in addition to the National Steel Can Corporation Hamilton. and the Peck rolling mills, both of which are strike-bound. Three thousand and four hundred employees of the Algorna steel mills, Ontario, will begin their “holiday” nt midnight on Friday, and 3500 employees of the Dominion Steel Co. will take a holiday, and workers elsewhere will follow

The “holidays” were ordered a few hours after the Prime- Minister, Mr. MacKenzie King, had banned labour debates in the Houso of Commons on the ground that they would give this dispute significance in the enemv’s eyes.
