Notes of the Day

Thera was a large crowd of relatives and friends on the Feilding station platform on Saturday afternoon to farewell members of the Special Force who were returning to camp after final leave. The soldiers travelled by the south-bound New Plymouth express, which was crowded with members of the force picked up en route. As the train pulled out the boys were enthusiastically cheered by the crowd. The monthly meeting of the women ’s organisation of the Feilding National Party was held recently. In the absence of Mrs. Brandt (president), Mrs, R. H. Buchanan presided. The mem•bers stood in silence as a mark of sympathy with Mrs. Brandt, who had recently suffered a bereavement in the loss of her brother. After the shop day held on October 18 to help the patriotic funds, almost £l4 was handed to the Patriotic Committee. . Many Feilding members of the Wel-lington-West Coast Regiment, now in camp at Wanganui, returned home for week-end leave on Saturday afternoon. They were looking particularly fit and much browned by sunshine and outdoor life. The camp was recently inspected by senior officers and commended for its excellent condition and discipline. The camp is expected to break-up shortly before Christmas, when the period of training will have been completed. In consequence of his departure from Feilding, Bro. H. J. Batten has resigned as treasurer of Court Loyal, Feilding, A.0.F., No. 5768. In recognition of his services to the court, Bro. Batten was made the recipient of a long service medal. C.R. Bro. Wilkinson, in making the presentation, spoke of the work Bro. Batten had done both in. the court and other social endeavours connected with it. Other members also made similar references. Bro. Batten, in thanking the court, said he would cherish the good wishes accorded him and prize the presentation.
