SUPPORT FOR NATIONAL DAIRY CONFERENCE
Fanners Have No Confidence in Mr. Nash "I consider that we should support the dairy farmers," said Mr, J. L. Lambert (Hunterville) at yesterday’s meeting of the Wellington Central Provincial Executive of the Farmers* < Union, held at Feilding, when referring to the resolution of no confidence in the Hon. W. Nash, passed by the National Dairy Conference. Mr. Lloyd Hammond (Rata) said that he could support the attitude because of his association with the dairying industry. The press report of the proceedings at the conference, he said, did not record anything like the language which was used by delegates in expressing their views over the failure of the Government to stand up to its arrangements for the guaranteed price. The dairy farmer was smarting under a sense of the injustice he was suffering, more particularly because the other man is not being asked to carry the burden of cost 3 which primary producers are being called upon to face up to. That was why the farmers were objecting. Mr. Nash, continued Mr. Hammond, had made a rod for his own back. The Government bad taken over the dairy farmers’ produce with an assurance of protection against rising costs, but they had not received any protection. The farmer feels that others are getting increases in remuneration for their services while he is being excluded. Hg realises more than anyone that the other question of increases is uneconomic but while others are getting increases ho feel 3 he should not be left out. Mr. J. B. S. Dudding (Marton) moved that the meeting endorse the resolution passed by the Dairy Conference expressing no confidence in the Minister of Marketing. Mr. J. L. Lambert seconded the motion. Mr. A. Howard (Marton) was of the opinion that the Minister should stand by the assurances he originally gave tho dairy industry. It appeared that Mr. Nash had practically admitted that the scheme had broken down and the sooner there was a frank admission of its impossibility the better for the country. Mr. Dudding: It’s a time for plain speaking. Mr. Hammond; A case of the chickens coming home to roost. The motion wa3 carried unanimously.
