(From Our Own Correspondent,) Mrs. L. Duffiji and daughter spent the week-end in Wanganui, Mrs. K. Robinson, of the Methodist Manse, has returned from brief visit to friends in Waituna. Miss O. M. Kerr has returned from Paraparauinu and Wellington, where she spent the week-end with relatives. Miss J. Cooper, of Kakariki, has returned from a week-end trip to Wellington, Miss E. Ferris, of Oarnaru, is staying with her brother-in-law, Mr, J. H. Fuller, of Kakariki. Miss Brett, of Kelson, has been staying with her sister, Mrs. E. Markham. Miss Edna Weaver, of Levin, spent the week-end with her sister, Mrs. L. W. A. Miller. Mr. A. Cawood, of Mokawhiti, is visiting his brother, Mr, E. Cawood. . Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Bleakley have returned from a week-end visit to relatives in New Plymouth, Mr, and Mrs. E, Long, who have been visiting Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Bleakley, have returned to Wanganui. Mr, and Mrs. L, Seigel. spent the week-end with relatives at Bunnythorpe. Mr. M. Te Punga, a student of Victoria University College, is spending his vacation with his parents, the Bev. H. H. and Mrs. Te Punga. Messrs. Jas. and Jonas Hughes have left to enter Territorial camp at Wanga- j nui. Mr. and Mrs. F. Pleasants, who have been the guests of Sir. and Sirs. R. A. Anderson, have returned to Matere. Messrs. D. C. Managh, W. Dais, R. McGreal and D. Bryant were among the many week-end visitors to Wellington. Aircraftsman C. Saul, who was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Fox during the week-end, has returned to Ohakea. Mrs. G. Hutton, senr., who has been a patient in the Palmerston North Hospital, has now been discharged and is home again. Women’s Patriotic Committee. The Halcombe women’s Patriotic Committee reports that during the month of October the following articles have been completed and forwa-rded to Zono E headquarters at Feilding:—Two . balaclavas, 13 scarves, seven pairs of mittens, one pair of navy socks, two navy pullovers and six facecloths. In addition to these, the Stanway Sewing Guild forwarded a parcel containing two scarves, three pairs of mittens and two pairs of socks. Two parcels of clothing for refugees have also been delivered to the Feilding headquarters of the Lady Galway Patriotic Guild. One of these contained 43 renovated cast-off garments and the other contained 36 garments made from new material by the members of the committee. A gift parcel was also addressed to each of the 14 members of the armed forces serving overseas and this included hand-knitted socks and articles of Christmas cheer. It is the intention of the committee to present each departing serviceman from the district with knitted comforts and these will consist of balaclavas, socks, scarves and mittens. A supply of these articles is being kept in reserve for this purpose. Tennis Club. At the annual meeting of the Halcombe Tennis Club Mr. E. W. Cowdrey, president, occupied the chair. The balance-sheet disclosed that the club is in a good position financially, having a credit balance of £3O 12s lOd. The total membership is 61, consisting of 25 men, 20 ladies and 16 junior members. OwiDg to the inclement weather which characterised the season and petrol restrictions no County Tennis Association matches were played and the only other matches played were two friendly games, one with St. Brigid’s Tennis Club and the other with the Stanway Tennis Club. Owing to various circumstances outside the control of the dub, the club championships had to fee abandoned, except for the junior championships in which Noeline O’Sullivan won the girls’ and Frank McGrail the boys’ championship honours. The following officers were elected for 1 the ensuing twelve months:—Patron,] Mr. R. J. Managh; president, Mr. G. Judd; vice-president, Mr. C. C. Bleakley; hon. secretary and treasurer, MrS, Thorn; club captain, Mr. L. Davies; vice-captain, Mr. Frank Dais; commit.- 1 tee, all the above and Mrs. R. J. Managh, Miss Vera Judd, Messrs. D. McNae, W. Dais, L. Williams, T. Clapham, H. Wilson and R. W. Taylor. A tribute yras to w Cow . drey, the retiring president of the clubf - Mr. Cowdrey, owing to the calls made upon hivS time by the duties associated with the position he occupies on various patriotic organisations, declined to accept nomination for the office and so retires from a position which he has occupied for eight years. During his time of office the two line new concrete courts were laid down and it is to his untiring energy and enthusiasm tha, the club possesses the very fine amenities its members enjoy to-dav.
