Shannon
(From Our Own Correspondent.) The Horowhenua cricket competition will be continued on Saturday, when Shannon play their third game in the second round, on their own ground. The fixtures are set down as follows: Shannon plays Levin at Shannon; Weraroa v. Air Force at Weraroa; and Old Boys v. Te Horo at Te Horo. The “500'' card evenings which ha\e been held all through the winter at Mangaore were brought to a close last week. The winners of the points prizes over the series were as follows.* Men, Mr. A. Robinson; ladies, Mrs. J. Astwood. At the annual meeting of the Mangaore Tennis Club Air. J. D. Campbell (president) presided over a good attendance. Reference to the successful season experienced by the club last season was made by the chairman who extended thanks to the ladies for the efficient manner in which they had taken care of the afternoon tea arrangements and to the outgoing committee for their work in the interests of the club. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mr. J. D. Campbell (ro-electod) j hon. secretary, Mrs. VV. Cameron; committee, Mr. and Mrs. J. Seager, and Messrs. A. Robinson and R. Jamieson, it was resolved to hold the official opening of the club on Saturday next, November 2. Farewell Evening. To-night (Thursday) a social evening Is being held in the Mangaore Social Hall when, during the earlier part of the evening, a “500" tournament will be played to oe followed after the supper adjournment by a dance. Advantage will be taken of the opportunity to mako a farewell presentation to Mr. E. Simes, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Simes, of Mangaore, in view of hi 3 impending departure with H.M. Forces overseas. PersonaL Although it will be at least two weeks before Mrs. Herbert Carter will bo ablo to leave the Palmerston North Hospital she is making good progress following her operation. Another patient, Mrs. C. A. Spring, after several weeks spent in bed is now able to walk a little. Mrs. J. Bowler also found it necessary to .enter hospital for treatment and all will join in wishing these patients a speedy recovery. The Women's Institute evening card party was again well attended, the pnze winners being Mrs. F. Thomson (ladies) and Mr. Edmonds (men). The presentation of a barometer was made to Mr. A. Semple at a social evening given in his honour by Ven. Bede’s Anglican Church organisations. In ranking the presentation Rev. G. B. Stote Blandy said that Mr. Semple as vicar's warden had been most helpful to him and over a period of more than nine years had given good and faithful service as a member of the vestry. Mr. C M. Cron quest as people’s warden wished Mr. Semple all the best in his new position as postmaster at Waipawa.
On behalf of the social committee Mrs. Waring Taylor thanked Mr. Semple for the assistance be had given when running dances, bazaars, etc.; her appreciation as organist was expressed to him for always having the organ m ! readiness. With Mrs. H. Easton at the piano musical honours were accorded the guest of honour. Supper was served : by the ladies and thanks were expressed to Mr. A. Burling, Miss Burling and Mr. Dawson for providing the music for dancing, Mr. Cronquest was M.C,
