Appeals Against Military Service
HOW THEY FARE IN AUCKLAND Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Oct. 25. Slightly more than 100 appeals were dealt with privately to-day by the Auckland Area Manpower Committee which is continuing to take urgent cases. Of to-day’s cases 38 were adjourned sine die on tho ground of the appellants’ temporary medical unfitness and, four cases were withdrawn by appellants. it has been noticed that the withdrawals are becoming more numerous as reservists either become aware of the pay and allowances in the Territorial Forces or as they become convinced that the likelihood of their succeeding .with their appeals is remote. The committee dismissed the appeals of 12 reservists who have volunteered but have not yet been called up for the Royal New Zealaud Air Force. Attention was also given to appeals brought by the heads of churches in respect of 19 ministers, priests, chaplains and divinity students. Iu the case of divinity students the committee was given evidence that the reservists had entered upon their studies before the outbreak of war and in all these and other cases adjournments sine die were granted. In accordance with the policy enunciated by the Government the Director of National Service lodged appeals for two skilled men employed at tho Musick Memorial radio station. A shortage oi skilled operators in the Department was indicated and the committee was also informed that a certain number of men were being specially trained for the work with a view to the oarly release of those liable for military service. The committee took into account the fact that the Department was maintaining communications essentially associated with the defence of New Zealand and adjourned the cases for six months.
