Nelson Without Fresh Fish Supplies

DISPUTE SETTLED NELSON, Oct. 15. A dispute between the Nelson jFishermen’s Union and a local wholesale Arm in respect to prices paid to fishermen has now been settled, an agreement being signed yesterday. For nearly three weeks Nelson has been without fresh fish supplies on account of the fishermen's decision to ship ail fish caught to Wellington as a protest against the refusal of the firm to raise prices. The fishermen's case was supported by the New Zealand Seamen’s Union, which refused to sail ships carrying fish to Nelson, also by the Nelson Watersiders’ Union. This prevented Nelson merchants from securing supplies from other ports. Representatives of the Fisheries Department, Price Investigation Tribunal, a local firm (the only one with a wholesale licence), Fishermen’s Union and* Seamen’s Union held meetings over the week-end, resulting in an agreement which provides for increased prices of a halfpenny per pound for schnapper, 3d for hapuka and otie penny for flounder. Under the agreement fishermen will be paid the following prices for the principal lines: Schnapper. 3d a lb.: hapuka, 4Jd; flounder, 8d; blue cod, 4sd; butterfish, 4£d. During the boycott the fishermen , have been supplying direct to such i institutions as the hospital.
